We have just opened another factory shipping box of Myco, Inc. Spinning Reels, and found a reel we have not offered for sale before! This listing is for an Ultra-Light Black Reel that we believe was extensively marketed in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Indiania, Kentucky and Michigan as the "Swiss Whiz" from 1952-1953.The biggest advertisers for the sale of this reel was the Dean Phipps Stores, Miller Auto Supplies, Moore's Fishing Tackle, Garden & Tractor, and Burkes Auto Stores. These reels were also advertised for sale by smaller retailers like Sport Shops, Army Navy Stores, Auto Supplies, Cycle Shops, Hardware, and Fishing Tackle shops. Many retailers paired the "Swiss Whiz" with a Shakespeare Rod for a Special Combo price. In 1953 the reels were advertised in Outdoor LIfe Magazine. The reels were promoted thru 1955 by some stores, but not as frequently.
This anodized Aluminum /Fishing Spinning /Reel, is over 70 years old, never used, in its original box, with original packing, and literature. It has been in storage since the 1950's. Reel has never been used, fished, owned or displayed. A rare opportunity for a mint reel, never owned, and right from the factory. The newspaper found in the shipping box from the factory is dated 1953, please see photos they are part of the item description.. A great vintage collectors reel. The designers at Myco, Inc. continued to evolve and produce several versions of spinning reels in their limited time of production that ranged from the Swiss Whiz and Swiss Whiz Jr to the Swiss Whiz Champ and Challenger. They designed reels that required 11 points of lubrications to later reels that only required 4 or 5. This reel is of the later, and contains a shorter version of "Important Instructions" that is found with "Champ" and "Challenger" Reels.
In a 1953 publication called "Spin Tackle Fishing" by Lee Harter and Tom Carlile they reported that there were more than 200 types of spinning reels available to the American consumer. They also estimated that there would be another 50 new reels on the market by the end of 1953.One chapter covering how to choose a spinning reel, the authors highlighted 21 fresh water spinning reels. One of the highlighted reels was the Swiss Whiz by Myco. Inc., as an" inexpensive spinning reel that would hold about 200 yards of 4 lb. test line, featuring an automatic bail pickup, and adjustable tension drag, and easily changed from right to left hand wind."
"This reel was designed for the Modern (1950's ) Light weight Spinning Rods.( In the 1950's true spinning rods were between 6 to 7 .5 feet in length, and weighed less than 5 oz.) These reels were redesigned from the original Swiss-type for universal use by the American Fisherman, every attention was paid to holding down the weight, retaining quality and durability and adding important features.. resulting in a better quality reel at lower cost"
